The Biblical Command to Free the Captive: How It Applies Today

The-Biblical-Command-to-Free-the-Captive-How-It-Applies-Today The Israel Store

The biblical command to free captives isn’t just ancient history—it’s a reality for today.

Isn’t it amazing how the Bible still hits us hard with truth thousands of years later? It’s not some irrelevant old book sitting on a dusty shelf. It’s alive and loud, especially when it tells us to free those in captivity. Isaiah 61:1 puts it plainly: “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me... He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives.” That’s not a suggestion. It’s a command. And the world today is still filled with captives waiting to be set free. Right now, Israel is fighting for its citizens held hostage by Hamas. These are real people living in fear, and their families are hanging by a thread. Today we want to cover that biblical command with you.

What the Bible Says About Captivity

The Bible is crystal clear: God expects His people to fight for freedom. He doesn’t look away when people are suffering. In Exodus 6:6, God promises the Israelites, “I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them.”

Psalm 82:4 says it even more forcefully: “Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” There’s no room for excuses here. God demands action.

And this isn’t just about spiritual freedom. It’s about real, physical captivity. The Bible cares about both.

Israel’s Hostage Crisis

In October 2023, Hamas launched a brutal attack on Israel, killing hundreds and kidnapping over 200 people. Entire families were ripped apart in a single day. Women, children, and elderly were dragged into Gaza and have been held there ever since.

Since then, Israel has been working tirelessly to bring them home. In recent weeks, a few hostages have been released through negotiations. One of them, Keith Siegel, an Israeli-American, was finally freed after weeks of captivity. His return was a moment of hope, but the fight isn’t over.

Israel knows the stakes. It has a moral obligation to bring its people back alive. But doing that isn’t easy.

The Hard Choices

Freeing hostages often comes with a cost. Israel has had to release Palestinian terrorists—many of whom have committed violent crimes—in exchange for its own citizens. It’s a brutal decision. On one hand, you’re saving innocent lives. On the other hand, you’re letting dangerous people go free.

In 2011, Israel exchanged more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for one soldier, Gilad Shalit. Critics said it set a dangerous precedent and would encourage more kidnappings. They weren’t wrong. But for Israel, saving even one life is worth the risk. This is rooted in the Jewish belief that saving one life is like saving the entire world.

But it’s still tough. Some of the prisoners released have gone on to commit more violence. Israel, like any nation, struggles with these hard realities. But the command to free captives remains strong.

What About the Rest of the World?

This isn’t just Israel’s issue. Millions of people are living in captivity around the world. Human trafficking, forced labor, political prisoners—you name it. It’s happening everywhere.

Proverbs 24:11 tells us, “Rescue those being led away to death.” But are we doing that? Too often, we turn a blind eye to suffering because it feels too overwhelming or too far away. The truth is, God expects more from us.

There are ways to help. Organizations are fighting human trafficking, advocating for prisoners, and working to free captives. You can pray, donate, or support policies that protect the vulnerable. Doing nothing is not an option.

There Is Hope

Even in the darkest situations, there’s always hope. Hostages are being freed, and families are being reunited. These moments remind us that freedom is possible. The Bible tells us that God is a deliverer. Psalm 146:7 says, “The LORD sets prisoners free.” He’s still in the business of breaking chains.

But God doesn’t work alone. He calls us to be part of the solution. Isaiah 42:7 speaks of freeing those who “sit in darkness.” That mission isn’t over. It’s on us to keep fighting for those still waiting for their freedom.

What Will You Do?

The Bible is clear: freeing the captive isn’t just a nice idea. It’s a command. And that command is still relevant today. Whether it’s hostages in Israel, trafficking victims around the world, victims in oppressive regimes, people need us to act.

So, what’s your move? Will you speak up? Will you support efforts to bring freedom to the captives? Or will you stay silent, thinking it’s someone else’s job?

The choice is yours—but remember, God isn’t neutral on this issue. He’s already told us what He expects. Now it’s up to us.
